With building thermal performance and energy efficiency requirements in place across Australia, it's beneficial to seek early design consultation to avoid surprises and project delays. Good passive design can improve thermal comfort, reduce the need for mechanical heating and cooling, lower energy bills and minimise greenhouse gas emissions. 

All new residential buildings, townhouses & apartment development buildings, and alteration & additions projects will require an energy rating report for building approval. The current minimum energy report star rating is 6, but the new NCC 2022 will require a minimum of 7 stars which will come into effect sometime in 2023. 

A Sustainable Development Assessment (SDA) and Sustainable Management Plan (SMA) may be required by some local councils in Victoria at town planning stage. The report will outline how a proposed development, such as a land subdivision into two or more townhouses, demonstrates sustainable design elements.
